My pregnant brain has already kicked in full force along with the all day morning sickness. I have to repeatedly remind myself why it's all worth it. Oddly enough the dear husband has been feeling offish lately too. I don't know that you can claim empathy pains while being thousands of miles away.

We've been crazy this past week and other than one international package that I need to deliver to the post office we are all caught up on out going orders. I have a few custom projects that will be started this weekend if all goes according to plan. DH lovingly told me that if he were pregnant he wouldn't be working. I told him that when he gets pregnant he is more than welcome to quit his job, but I will stick to it until the little one arrives. I'm a bit saddened and scared about walking away from the optical world for a bit, but am excited to spend all my efforts focusing on my family and store. With the few brain cells I have left I'll be mentally preparing for that transition.

The lack of a fully functioning brain also left me unsure of what to offer this week, so we're giving away a $20 gift certificate to our shop. You can pick your own fluffy score this way. So comment below and tell us what you'd buy with your gift certificate. WWW.SWEETCAMO.COM

As for the last giveaway; Raymie was unavailable to pick the number, we later discovered he was wiggling into a gorilla costume, backwards none the less, so Dylan had a shot at our highly scientific selection method and picked # 10. Yay, forloveofbaby! Tiny fluff will be on it's way to you soon!

We decided to add an opportunity to double your chances to win. So if you share a link to our blog somewhere, Facebook, Twitter, or where ever you hang out and then come back and comment again with where you shared and you'll have extra entries.

It's a Baby!!

We officially announced this week that we are expecting another Sweet Camo Baby. I wouldn't say we were actively trying so much as testing some theories. I love the Family Awareness Method outlined in the book that every woman should own, Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Regardless of whether you want to build your family or not it shares some scientific insight on why your body does what it does and puts you in control. I've never felt so empowered as when I took charge of my fertility. If you didn't know I live in the testosterone jungle and I dream of all things pink and frilly. When I learned about the Shettles Method I had to try it! His theories are based on the same ideas brought forth in TCOYF. So in several months we will learn if there's pink or blue in our future. Through sheer luck our timing was just about right prior to my husband leaving for 7 weeks, it was awfully sweet of him to leave me an anniversary gift.

Now that we know we have a little jelly bean on the way my I've already begun building my newborn stash mentally. I know exactly what fitteds, pre-folds, covers, and all-in-ones I NEED. Alas, I have promised my very tolerant husband that I will not buy diapers for this baby until we know if it's a he or she. Any bets?

Think I forgot TGIFluff? Not a chance! Since we've got tiny fluff on the brain we're giving away a set of itty bitty diapers to one lucky reader. One teeny, tiny, squishy newborn Goodmama and an equally small and adorable xs Bumgenius All-in-One. Both are perfectly designed for your wee little one and who doesn't need a few more newborn diapers?

We want to hear all about the bitty baby who would wear this cozy cloth. Are you due any day? Counting months? Or still waiting on two pink lines? Leave a comment and you could win.

And the winner from the Rockin' Green Giveaway chosen by our highly scientific 6 year old method (Raymie pick a number between 1 and 6. Aaaaaaaa-uuuuummmm 5) : Lisa

It's all in the Packaging

There is nothing more frustrating then presenting your wonderful eco-friendly products in those horrible plastic bags. And I cringe everytime I seal up soft and squishy fluff in those polymailers. I often reuse our shipping supplies, but the results are not always pretty.

We were very excited when we found a local business that supplies eco-friendly packaging. The coffee shop/playground downstairs uses their to go cups and lids and now we have Trellis Earth biodegradable bags and we get them through Green Alaska Solutions, right here in Anchorage. While we still encourage the reusable or no bags we feel much better about our new bags. Not only are they better for the environment and are a good match for our store, but they are a quality bag that is sturdier than any plastic bag I've ever seen at a grocery store. They just feel thicker and don't tear under pressure as easily.

Once we found our happy bags we began the hunt for a shipping option. We often use the packaging provided by USPS since those little cardboard boxes are easy to reuse and recycle, but we find that many of our orders ship First Class leaving us to use less than ideal packaging. So imagin how exciting I was to hear from Thirsties about their new sister company, Eco Enclose. They offer a fully biodegradable polymailer. It can even be composted! Made in the USA we can now ship guilt free. You'll know our eco-friendly polymailers by the earthy brown printing. I also love that they feature two sticky closure strips so that you can easily use them again before sending them to breakdown. Available in a variety of sizes you're sure to find an option to suit any of your shipping needs.

It makes us so happy to have the materials we need to make our company as sustainable as the items we carry. Being green is a lifestyle for us and we want to be able to show that.

Cloth Diapers in Daycare

While mama, daddy, and the occasional unsuspecting older sibling may be cloth diapering experts sometimes someone has to care for baby that isn't as in the know. We're lucky to have a large circle of friends that use cloth, so I can just as confidently drop of my child with a pile of pre-folds as I could a pack of sposies and our other sitting options have been great in learning about our diapers and working with them. So we've got some tips and tricks for making it easier on those willing to watch your little cloth diapered babe.

Introduce your caregiver to your cloth. Convenience diapers such as All-in-Ones and Pockets are the easiest for them to figure out. Bring along your wet bag and wipes if you're also using cloth wipes and show them how everything goes into your bag and comes home. On one instance we had the caregiver place the diapers in a plastic grocery bag and then the wetbag. From that experience we learned we needed to be clearer about that aspect of our diapering system.

Give them an opprotunity to see them in action. Demonstrate and then walk them through a changing with your child. This is more important if your using a system such as pre-folds that may require the use of pins or snappis. Most diaper manufacturers have how-to instructions make a copy for your caregiver to refer to during their initial weeks of cloth diaper use.

Be flexible. Your favorite system at home may not be the most convenient for your caregiver especially if they have multiple children to care for. Would it be easier for them to have the aplix version of your snapping diapers? Or to have only one style in the diaper bag? I know families who have a stash of diapers that only go to the daycare and this keeps things simple.

You were a begginer once too. Have you ever put wool over a PUL diaper? Accidentally used microfiber against babies skin? Mistakenly used an unapproved cream on your diapers? Had a pre-fold pinned so wonkily a poo escaped? These are things your caregiver may experience if you don't share some of your own learning hurdles. And don't expect them to get it all over night either. So give them a trial period to get the hang of it.

Enjoy this chance to share your joys of cloth. You have your own reasons for using cloth diapers, from saving money and the planet, to being healthier for your baby, or just because it's cute. This may be your caregivers first exposure to modern cloth diapers and their opinions may be formed on your attitude and how you present them. You may be planting the seed for a future cloth diapering family to grow.

If you're using a child care center be aware of your state's regulations. Many centers may claim regulations prohibit cloth diaper use and this is rarely the case.

Looking for a cloth diaper friendly center? Thousands of mothers sharing cringe worthy photos of seemingly burned baby bits and tales of horrific "rashes" are joining together in class action lawsuits, petitions, and groups. Meanwhile P&G claims nothing has changed and that these parents are using the product improperly or just don't know what they're talking about. All this has resulted in many cloth diapering parents thinking "Another reason I'm glad I use cloth." In response P&G had waged war on cloth diapers by creating a joke of a facts and myths page. This page has since been removed thanks to diligent cloth diaper supporters.

Curious what it said? Well we've got it here to share and have added our own 2 cents:

Pampers Myth: Disposable diapers are harmful to the environment.
Pampers “Fact”: All of the component materials in Pampers diapers are gentle to consumers and safe for the environment. Pampers diapers are made of materials that are also frequently used in a wide range of other consumer products. We are committed to continuing to reduce our environmental impact. For example, Pampers has decreased its diaper weight by one-third and packaging weight by two-thirds. And innovative technologies, raw materials, and product design improvements have led to significant reductions in energy, water use, emissions, and waste at our plants. We are working so that our diapers in the future will have less impact on the environment than even today’s diapers.

My Truth: Last time I checked trash is still trash. One time use disposable diapers are the third largest consumer item in American landfills. Disposable diapers also take 250-500 years to decompose. And just because their materials are also found in many other products widely used doesn't make it the best option. Just about every store I've been in uses plastic t-shirt bags, but there has been a huge push to limit their use and even the state of California has passed laws preventing their use, so obviously widespread use of a material does not an eco-friendly option make. I just hope there is an environment left for their future diapers to have less of an impact on. By switching to cloth diapers and other cloth alternatives in our home, coupled with recycling we have eliminated our need for trash service.

Pampers Myth: Cloth diapers are better for my baby.
Pampers “Fact”: Disposable diapers like Pampers were developed to offer babies benefits that cloth diapers could not meet. That goes beyond convenience to helping keep babies’ skin dryer and more comfortable by reducing leaks and locking wetness inside the diaper in a way that cloth doesn’t. As a result, doctors and parents simply don’t see the same level of diaper rash that used to exist before disposable diapers.

My Truth: Evolution, it's not just for the animals. On a regular basis I have older women marvel at our cloth diapers. "Not like that when my kids were in diapers" is a comment heard repeatedly. The disposable diapers have change greatly in just the last ten years as well and it's short sighted to think that only disposables could make the journey into the 21st century. With all the new materials available cloth diapers are highly absorbant, can keep baby dry, and truly cause less instances of diaper rash. In 1955 BD (Before disposables) it was estimated that 7% of diaper aged children had diaper rash. By 1991 PD(Post disposables) the number increased to 78%. I guess they're right you don't see the same level of diaper rash, you see more. Disposables are host to the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals, dioxin. They also contain Tributyl-tin. Those sound healthy to me.

Pampers Myth: Developing countries prove that cloth diapers are better than disposable diapers.
Pampers “Fact”: Our product provides key benefits in terms of skin health, dryness, and even sleep. In China, for example, we've learned that babies and parents are frequently awakened during the night each time the baby soaks the bed, because the baby has no diaper or a very thin piece of cloth. As a result, studies have shown that a disposable diaper can help a baby there get a better night's sleep. In another test, we have also seen less fecal contamination spread around the home using disposables versus cloth or nothing.

My Truth: Are we comparing apples to oranges here? It's unfair to compare developing and already developed countries. When we began using cloth I was intimidated by night cloth diapering and continued to use my jumbo Costco package of disposables at night. I still got woken by a soaked baby and had to change the sheets and everyone's cloths. When I realized I had nothing to lose we tried cloth and magically I haven't had wet bedding in over a year.

Pampers Myth: The materials that make up Pampers diapers are depleting our forests.
Pampers "Fact": The pulp used in our diapers comes from well-managed forests in North America. In some cases, we source our pulp from scrap wood chips from lumber and saw mills. Our pulp suppliers are required to be certified by an independent third party as practicing sustainable forestry. Certification includes standards and criteria for replanting trees, protecting biodiversity, water, air and soil, and for obtaining broad stakeholder input into the forest management plan.

Truth: Pampers uses next to no wood pulp in their DryMax diaper, maybe it was that little bit more of wood product that help prevent the chemical burns in their old style. We should all know that companies often tout their eco standards, but few hold true certifications by regulation boards. But in a time where eco is chic who wouldn't believe their ramblings of sustainablity?

We are proud to be a member of the Real Diaper Association and Real Diaper Industry Association they provide us with invaluble resourcesand lead the way in cloth diaper advocacy. The plethora of things that can go wrong makes me think twice, sometimes more before trying something new on my diapers. Since day one we have been Charlie's users. It shows up on the approved detergent list for just about every cloth diaper company out there, it washes clean, and the stuff lasts forever. I once used Country Save as at the time I could find it locally and not the Charlie's, but I'm convinced it made things funky.

I began to have customers inquire about Rockin' Green and while I had heard good things I still wasn't sold. But then I heard from Kim the fabulously sweet mastermind behind Rockin' Green and was willing to try a sample. When you first get a package containing Rockin' Green the thing you notice is the delicious smell. I wonder how the mailman can bring himself to part with such scrumptious packages. If ever one doesn't show up I'm sure it'll be because he's stashed it somewhere for his aromatic pleasure. I used the samples I received and was satisfied enough to add them to our product offereings. They are a welcome addition as they fly of the shelves. Move over Charlie's!

Some weeks later we ran out of our detergent and needed a new one, so I asked the husband to bring home some Rockin' Green from the shop. We haven't been having any issues with our diapers and didn't feel we needed the soak, but after seeing all the incredibly gross pictures of soak water on the Rockin' Green Facebook page I was curious; what was hanging out in my diapers that I didn't want there? So we fired up a soak! Luckily our water was still prettyclear after the little experiment. And we had minimal bubbling. It wasn't until after the diapers came out of the machine that I became a convert. Our microfiber was clean! I'll admit I used to bleach my microfiber inserts; it was the only thing that kept the stink away long term. That once a month bleaching was the bain of my diaper laundry and in one simple soak Rockin' Green transformed my microfiber. It was like diaper laundry nirvana! Ask not what you can do for Rockin' Green, but what can Rockin' Green do for you....

I soaked my highchair cover. Amazing! I soaked the husband's nasty Army uniforms. Wonderful! I looked at my nasty fabric softner dispenser and got an idea. We haven't used softener in over a year and I've tried repeatedly to clean the stupid thing out. I even ran it through the dishwasher and it still had a gelatinous funk. Even scrubbing with a little brush only provided minimal results.

So we filled up the sink with hot water and rocked a soak:

Uber nasty while the sink filled

Within minutes the water begins to get funktastic

You can actually see it bubbling!

Tada! It was the perfect show to help us get our feet wet as we haven’t had a booth before. We were happy to find a cloth diapering family in this small town and we fit right in with all our crunchiness. My husband loved the Mayberry feel of it. You could tell everyone knew each other and they were a close knit community.

I loved that on a whole the community was very green minded; they live Earth Day everyday. At the event the recycling truck set up and everyone brought their recyclables. And there was a petition for making it more readily available. The local café doesn’t serve bottled water. If you mistakenly ask for it you’ll get a friendly explanation about their quality filtered water and they’ll be happy to get you a glass of it. After all we don’t want those bottles ending up in a landfill. We of course had our own reusable bottles to fill.

The kids had their own fun. Riley made fast friends with some of the furrier locals. The older boys made sundials and explored food chains with the Wildlife Management crew. The hanger in Talkeetna is cozy, but you can tell it is the center of the town’s entertainment. It was pleasant to wonder through the other tables and we took home our share of fun stuff; dyed bamboo socks for the whole family and a woven rug made from recycled fabrics. I was also excited to pick up a sourdough starter. It has been a wonderful addition to our weekly bread repertoire.

We always hope to share our love of cloth diapers when we venture out, but our two hour drive to the town of Talkeetna taught us a little bit about slowing down. The One Sized Pocket was part of our initial stash and is still in rotation today. We had to try one of the Organic all-in-ones as soon as they arrived. While I will always advocate proper prepping of our diapers I can rarely wait that long. Before we left the store on the day they arrived we had one on the bum.

Out of the package I immediately noticed how soft the organic cotton inner was. Now I think I need some organic cotton undies for myself. I liked the two rows of snaps for giving a separate fitting option for thighs and waist. Our turkey will still have growing room. I was able to fold the soaker to put the absorbency in the front where we need it. That's always a plus for little boys!

Our timing was poor and I found myself needing to put him down for his nap shortly after trying our new fluff on. While a new untested un-prepped diaper is not my first choice for nap time I decided maybe we should just see what this diaper could do. I put the turkey down and crossed my fingers. Usually the anti-napper he slept for almost two hours. Though he was soaked when he woke everything stayed where it was supposed to. Woo-hoo!

Into the wash our bumGenius! OS Organic went. The soaker is sewn in at both ends, however, the layers aren't all attached as one lump of soaker making it dry quicker than some of our other all-in-ones. It's dry time was closest to a Goodmama with the soaker still snapped in. Not as quick as a pre-fold or some of our fitteds, but even on low I didn't spend the whole day waiting for our diaper to dry, nor did I have to put it back in for special drying on it's own. I could see this not being the quickest drying diaper in your stash if you're line drying.

As with any diaper time is the best test of a diaper, but our initial experience has been pleasant. I like that the snaps should out live our aplix. Thus far we've given it our stamp of approval and will be keeping it in our stash to use on the boy and whoever else comes along.

Would you like to try one for yourself? Do you need more in your stash? Share with us what you love about your bumGenius! Organic One Sized All-in-One or what about them makes you think you need one and you could snag one of your own. Want to boost your chances of winning? Share a tweet about us and post again with the link. Tell a friend and when they post with your name you can post again. So post and then help us spread the word. The winner will be chosen at random and announced on Friday Dec 11th.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sweetcamobabytique.blogspot.com/2009/12/bumgenius-one-sized-organic-all-in-one.html' title='bumGenius! But sometimes it does happen and you have to take care to clear up your babe's tush without taking it out on your beloved diapers. We've recently had to battle our own rash issues and I'm hoping a little of what

What causes diaper rash?

Babies come with soft sensitive skin and when you add wetness and the rubbing of a diaper it can become irritated. This irritation can be worsened by bacteria and yeast.

How can you prevent diaper rash?

1- Change diapers frequently. One of the benefits of cloth is it's easier for you to tell when your baby is wet and make changes quickly.

2- Rinse your diapers well. Check for bubbles in your rinse cycles or other signs of build up, like repelling. Baby's sensitive skin also may not agree with your detergent.

3- Allow some naked time for your baby's bottom to air out. This can be as simple as allowing a few minutes between changes or as lengthy as a scheduled naked play time.

4- Use a stay dry or barrier method. Fleece makes a great dry barrier for baby, some pocket style diapers come with a fleece layer for stay dry protection. If you're using a system without fleece you may want to consider fleece liners. Barrier creams can also help keep the moisture off, while most creams on the market work great with disposable diapers you need to be more careful with cloth. We highly recommend Northern Essence's Better But-ter. It's all natural and cloth diaper safe. Liners can also make it easier to use other creams and protect your cloth diapers.

How do you treat a diaper rash?

We're not medical professionals and recommend you check with your physician before starting any treatment. However, we have found that many of the ways to prevent rashes are part of helping to clear it up as well. The key is to eliminate irritants without causing further damage. Using warm water and patting dry rather than rubbing is a gentle way to cleanse the diaper area.

Our most recent bout of diaper rash was due to yeast. As I began the consuming task of stripping and treating our stash I gave our little one warm baths with vinegar and added a TBSP of vinegar to our wipes spray and the rash was cleared much quicker than when we treated with prescription creams.

Cloth Diapering, Our Way of Life

This week I had the sad realization that not everyone in the cloth diapering business is truly passionate about it and only view it as another product to capitalize on since times are tough and green is good. I felt like a small child who just learned there wasn't a Santa Clause. I appreciate that we live in a country that supports free trade and regardless of who it is I'm always excited to see cloth diapers available in any store. But I'm disheartened by sales people who have no true interest in the world of cloth. For us cloth is a lifestyle and we enjoy it.

As a consumer I'd be a hard sell if one was extolling the wonders of cloth while their babe's sweet bum had never experienced the squishy plushness of a cloth diaper. Cloth diapers are wonderful for your baby, wallet (unless you're a fluff addict), and environment. I think everyone should get to experience the excitement of fluffy mail, the peacefulness of folding pre-folds, and the waddle of a cushie tushie. And I want to share those experiences with them.

When we decided to cloth diaper our baby I was amazed by all the different options and somewhat overwhelmed. But then I learned what a great community there is for cloth diapering. It's more than just a parenting decision it's a whole culture; a way of life. It's like pregnancy. Every woman who has ever had a baby feels an instant connection to every pregnant woman they see. Smiles are shared and conversations started all because of this one thing they have in common. Much in the same way a cloth diapering mom will inwardly squeal at the site of a cloth diaper peeking out on another child and will quickly concoct an ice breaker that doesn't sound too crazy, so that she can talk fluff for just a moment with this stranger. I'll admit I'm often on fluff patrol. Nothing makes my day more than meeting other cloth diapering moms. More exciting is converting moms to cloth. It's like an initiation into a private club. I'm lucky to have a group of friends who all use cloth and we're always trying to add to our "cult" as one of our members' husband often teases.

And it would seem that cloth diapers are just a starting point to a world of cloth goodness. Cloth wipes are an easy step with cloth diapers and then you realize how handy they are and start sing them to clean hands and faces, and then suddenly you have happy stacks of multipurpose wipes strategically placed for your everyday needs. And for some cloth continues to grow into their lives in the form of family cloth, reusable pads, and more. Suddenly everything that was once so disposable in your life is soft, washable, and fun. No matter how you praise the goodness of cloth few will ever understand until they've tried it themselves.

I encourage all cloth users to find a community online or in real life to share your fluffy joys with.

Everything I need to know about life I learned from cloth diapers:

A little sunshine will brighten up all the dark spots.

When you fall it's nice to have a padded landing.

Keep trying, you will succeed.

It all comes out in the wash.

The right underthings complete an outfit.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Free shipping is always worth it no matter how much extra you spend to get it.

What the Flat!?

Flats are work horse diapers. They can be folded and adjusted a hundred different ways. They wash easily and dry quickly. Flats are also very cheap to get. My first pack of flats sat prepped and unused for quite a few months and then I found some new uses. They rarely see a bum, but we're getting our money's worth.

10 things you can do with a flat cloth diaper

1-Put your origami skills to work and slap it on the bum. The first one had to be it's intended purpose. :)

2- Play peek-a-boo with your baby. Riley is quite happy for hours on end with this favorite baby game. Mama, however, accomplishes little else while playing.

3- Give your self a facial wrap. Traditional birdseye flats are often used in day spas for those luxurious facials. You probably don't have time to shower let alone perform this treat, but isn't it nice to know you have the flat to do it with?

4- Dust your furniture. I often discover it's been too long between dustings when I go looking for a wine glass and discover grinning stick people across the cabinet. Flats make great dust rags and general clean ups.

5- Surrender! Build a couple forts using pillows and blankets and then run your flat up as your white flag. If properly timed you may be able to hide in your fort and get a 20 minute nap before your kids organize their next coup.

6- The wet towel trick. My husband is among the group of grown men who think it's funny to twist and flick with a damp towel. A bath towel has nothing on the speed of a flat. Think payback!

7- Doublers. A flat folded into a small rectangle makes a great doubler for over night diapering, it can also be used as an insert for your pocekt diapers.

8- On the go changing pad. A flat is light and fits easily into any diaper bag, I spread one out on the grass and did bum changes several times during our trip to the fair last month.

9- Burp cloths. Your versatile flat is also good for protecting the sholders of those who can't wait to love your baby, even after you've warned them of his projectile urp.

10- Hands and faces. A nicely sized flat slips easily through a belt loop and can be used for constant hand and face wiping during the day.

We've also folded them into pirate hats, used them as makeshift bibs, and used the really icky ones to wash the truck once. With a little creative thinking you can probably find a dozen more uses for those flats long after your little one needs diapers.

Woohoo for Wipes!

We used to buy those ginormous boxes of disposible wipes. I thought those things were God's gift to parenting. Not only did they handle diaper changes, but stashed in the car they could be used for wiping faces and hands or the gunk on the bottom of someone's shoe, wipe off shopping cart handles and a package by the bed for those you know nights. Never was such a handy thing as the wipie! Even after we switched to cloth diapers we used our little wet friends.

Then one day I had a conversation with a friend. She was appalled to learn that her wipes, which she held in the same esteem that I did, were not antibacterial. My mind raced to the times I had used a disposible wipe as a means of cleaning some pretty gross things. While they were still pretty handy my hand sanitizer got an immediate promotion. Eventually our jumbo box began to run low. I had heard of cloth wipes and the various ways people used them and I had to admit that throwing a wipe into the trash and a diaper into the pail for reuse seemed silly. Plus sometimes I'd find a sposie wipe tucked into the diapers as they tumbled into the wash and digging it back out was not the highlight of my day, so what did I have to lose by trying it out.

So armed with a little openmindedness I set off on a quest for the wipes system of my dreams. Just like cloth diapers there is an assortment of materials for you to choose from and depending on who you ask any number of combinations that work well. I like variety and trying to make decisions takes a bit more effort than I was willing to devote to wipes, so I picked several different options and hoped that something would work. If anything else we'd have some pretty washcloths. But this is what I've learned:

Flannel makes the best wipes material from my own experience and the majority of people I've talked to. It is soft and absorbant and when backed with something like terry it is the ultimate poo wipe. It is also easy to come by and cheap should you be motivated enough to make your own wipes.

As mentioned above Terry is great for poo duty. It really grabs the ick and then if you're lucky enough to have flannel on the back you can dry with that side. There is a small looped stretch odterry(think baby wash cloth; these also make good wipes to some) which gets the job done and is more often seen, but the larger loop terry like a bath towel is much more effective in my opinion.

Velour also works ok as far as wiping goes. If anything it's pretty darn soft, though backing it with a knit fabric nearly undermines it's wipe potential, but if you enjoy looking at your wipes as much as using them then more power to ya.

I don't have as much experience with fleece as a wipes material, I feel the thinner fleece like what's used in diapers is better than the thicker fleece you'd find at craft stores. But like anything else clothdiaper related feel free to experiment.

My box of wipes arrives now how to use them...I had read that many people use a wipe solution in a wipes warmer or old wipes container and fold the wipes in and then they have pre-moistened wipes. This idea appealled to me since I had such a love for those darn wet disposibles. But for every person I saw that loved this method there was someone complaining about the constant refilling and growth of things in their warmer. While I tend to kill every house plant that comes to live with us there was little doubt in my mind I could grow funk in a wipes container. Plus we didn't have a wipes warmer or old container and buying either wasn't high on my list of priorities, afterall, we were using cloth diapers to save money and I had cute wipes to buy instead.

I stumbled across the plain water method. For osome this involves a stop at the sink on the way to a change and wetting the wipe. For others there is a spray or squeeze bottle at the changing area to dampen the wipes. Nevermind that I walk past the bathroom on the way to every change, but I would not be stopping to wet a wipe on each trip. And what if you had a icky poo that required more wipes than I prepared? How would you manage a trip back to your sink mid change? At the time I didn't know how much more effective a cloth wipe was at cleaning an icky bum. My peri-bottle which I had heard was great as a wipie wetter had already been assigned to lanolizing duty, but I managed to find a small spray bottle. A couple sprays on the wipe and I had a soft wipe for the little bum. Maybe I had been ruined by years of disposible wipes use, but I just didn't feel as though the bum was clean if I didn't have a pretty scent too, so off to explore solutions I went.

I tried the Diaper Lotion Potion from Kissaluvs and the solution from Happy Heineys. I really liked the HH version, but found the smell of the DLP to be a bit strong for my liking. I soon learned that spraying the bum directly greatly improved the cleaning process and prolonged the life of a bottle of solution. Some time later I heard tales of people putting together their own solutions and I felt inclined to dabble myself.

What I use: 1 cup distilled water, 2 drops Tea Tree Oil, 2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

It smells just light enough and the TTO has antibacterial properties. Some people prefer to use Grapeseed Extract and add a little babywash as well. It's another one of those things that's up for experimentation.

After the cloth wipe entered our lives he mulitpled around our house. A basket in the kitchen replaced our paper towels, a stack on the table ran off our napkins, and assortment in the bathroom and the toilet paper is for guest use only. It was amazing how quickly the cloth wipe took over our lives leading us to a relatively paper free exsistence. Occasionally my 5 hyear old asks if the wipe he's using on his face was used to wipe his brother's butt. What he doesn't know won't hurt him...

Brick & Mortar Grand Opening

Shop today and be entered in our drawing!

You could win one of our grand opening packages:
1. Look for the following signs:
-If wool sits on top of the water and has little pools of water gathering on top - it does not need lanolizing.
-If wool sits on top of the water and has some pools and some areas that absorbed water without assistance - it could use a good lanolizing soon.
-If wool sinks and saturates completely - it is time to lanolize.

Now here's how to lanolize without those pesky lanolin spots. I've been very thorough, so there are quite a few pictures. Have fun!

Step 1: Locate wool and wash. I'll be using Aveeno baby wash because Kellie has sensitive skin and I know this doesn't bother her. We avoid any excess scents if possible. Wool-specific wash is available. But when this works, why pay extra?

Step 2: Fill the sink with tepid water. Test with wrist.
Step 3: Add baby wash.

Step 4: Add wool. Notice my wool soaked up water over it's entire body. This cover has never been lanolized.

Step 5: Swish wool around a bit. Make some bubbles.

Step 6: Check the clock. Let wool sit for five minutes.

In that five minutes you could:
Unload the dishwasher.

Make a pot of coffee.

Feed the dog.

Ding! Five minutes are up. Go back to your wool.

Step 8: Swish it around a bit more.

Step 9: Massage gently. I'm using regular solid lanolin purchased from a local retailer. Liquid lanolin will work, also. But this stuff is cheaper and it lasts longer. Remember, we're cloth diapering to save money.

Step 14: Add a pea-sized drop of lanolin to your mixing container.

Step 15: Add a pea-sized drop of wool wash to your container.

Step 16: : Fill halfway with HOT water. The drying process can take up to 48 hours. Good thing I didn't take pictures of that, right?

And you're done! You lanolized your wool and didn't get a single lanolin spot! Give yourself a pat on the back. I'm off to get Kellie. She'll be hungry by now.

© 2007, Laura Gent May not be copied or reprinted without permission.

My beautiful friend Laura put together this wonderful instructional. I aspire to her crunchiness, but am left feeling more like a Wookie, get it I'm chewy, lol. Ok I won't quit my day job. But this is essentially the method we use for our wool, so why re-invent her well articulated wheel? I will add that we usually throw our wool into the washer and run a spin cycle only after lanolizing, this removes most of the water and cuts down on drying time. If your looking for a good squeezey bottle the peri-bottle you usually get at the hospital after delivery is great for this. I learned that after giving my boys permission touseit as a water gun and had to pilfer it back from them.

I'm also a procrastinator and will wait until all our wool absolutely has to be lanolized leaving me with a pile instead of one little item, so this same method on a larger scale in the bathtub works quite well. It does double duty by making me scrub out the tub and I can check another much needed chore off my to do list. Just don't forget it and leave your woolies soaking till bathtime. There is little worse than walking to the tub with a ready for bed baby covered in spaghetti dinner and realizing your tub is still preoccupied with it's last task.

Green Mountain Diapers also has a good video on their website if you need visuals in motion. In fact I think they say lanolizing is so easy a 7 year old can do it.

The Wonders of Wool

We turned our heat on yesterday and the leaves are changing from green to yellow in record speed. I find myself looking to the mountains for signs of “termination dust”. Winter will soon be upon us and it’s time to ensure our woolies are ready for action.

Wool is one of those marvel materials in the cloth diapering world. While many are self proclaimed wool addicts others are intimidated and intrigued by it. So what makes wool so great?

First, wool is natural and renewable. Because it’s natural it makes for a breathable cover over cloth diapers. Wool is cool in warm weather and warm in winter. It also has antimicrobial properties which is nice when you think of how it’s used in longies and soakers. It is hygroscopic. This means that it both absorbs and gives of moisture. Wool can absorb nearly a third of its own weight in moisture. It pulls the wetness to its core leaving it dry to the touch. It is also nice and stretchy making it comfortable. I have often said that I’d like a pair of longies for myself; they seem so cozy. All of these characteristics are what makes wool so lovable.

Now that you know why wool is a great material you may be wondering how you can work this wonder wool in to your cloth diapering system. Wool can be made into yarn, felt, and interlock materials. And these materials can be used to make longies, shorties, soakers, skirties, or wraps. If you’re crafty enough to have knitting skills, hand knit some of these items. I understand that Sheepy Time Knits has a good pattern. Knit longies etc are gorgeous and every time I see a knit skirty my desire for a little girl slips into obsession. I’m lucky enough to have a dear friend whose knitting skills are very drool worthy. Sometimes she takes pity on me and my lack of knitting ability. If neither of those are options for you there are designers out there where you can buy knitted items. We love Crankypants! But there are a lot of excellent WAHM who offer their knitting services.

Interlock wool is extremely forgiving and durable. I’ve been known to run ours through the washing machine. It comes in a rainbow of colors. And you’ll probably want them all. They can be appliquéd and embroidered and are perfect for everyday wear. Interlock longies makeup the largest portion of our babe’s wardrobe. Those tiny jeans I loved so much on my older boys were quickly replaced in my heart. We love wool interlock soakers for overnights, no wet sheets here, Sustainablebabyish are our favorites. We’ve also been very pleased with our interlock items from Royal Buns, and Wild Child Woolies.

No discussion of wool is complete without discussing recycled wool. Did you shrink your husband’s favorite wool sweater? Well it can find new life as a soaker for your little one. There’s nothing better than finding a new use for old items. Woollybottoms makes wonderful items out of recycled wool. Their footies are super soft and perfect for those cold winter days.

Now that you understand why we love wool check out how to lanolize them, here.

FuzziBunz One Sized Rewards

Special offer directly from Fuzzi Bunz. There’s a saying about Rome and your diaper stash follows the same mantra. There is no set answer though most advice is similar. But no one can really answer this question for you and any experienced cloth diaperer will tell you there is a great deal of trial and error in building your perfect stash. And your ideal stash will change as your child grows and your needs change. But things to consider include: How often do you want to wash; going longer between washings requires a larger stash. What will your wash routine be like; natural fibers hold up better in rigorous routines. Why are you looking to use cloth; pre-folds and flats are economically friendly, all systems are eco-friendly, though there is some debate about bamboo manufacturing, and other systems are just plan cute.

Our stash could probably diaper a small country, but I like to try every new thing that comes out, especially from WAHMs. But the development of the stash we use regularly has been an adventure. After months of extended research and 6 weeks of disposables I jumped into the cloth diaper ocean. I’d read all the recommendations saying I’d need about 3 dozen diapers to keep my baby fluffy and not live chained to my washer or have to pray that the dryer finishes before he wets the last diaper on his bum. But like many parents the upfront costs made me balk a bit. There were so many options out there and I didn’t know which system I’d like the best or what my husband who was gone would even think when he returned home. But with sheer determination I picked a few different things and pressed forward.

Our initial stash consisted of two fitteds, three covers, two all-in-ones, three one sized pockets, one dozen pre-folds, and a dozen flats. I thought I’d love the ease of pockets and all-in-ones, but pre-folds and flats were a very economical way to boost the number of diapers I had on hand. I also threw in two pail liners, a wet bag, and detergent. While not absolutely necessary these are items that make the whole process easier. We later added a diaper sprayer, which is one of the most handy cloth diapering accessories out there.

While I will admit pre-folds and flats are very versatile and wash and dry with ease. In the beginning I quickly decided they weren’t for us. Pins scared me, my husband thought a Snappi was a weapon of mass destruction, and simply tri-folding and laying them in a cover did not seem to provide the protection we needed. Plus the squishy softness of some of our fitteds seemed hard to beat. And dear husband preferred the sposie likeness of pockets and all-in-ones. So we found ourselves adding more fitteds, pockets, and all-in-ones to our stash and only calling on those pre-folds and flats in dire emergencies or in case of urping. In my pre-cloth life I knew what great burp cloths pre-folds made. I’ve since become a great pinner, can Snappi with ease even on a squiggley baby. I have found that pre-folds make great stuffers for those pockets and flats are good for using as doublers in our night time diaper. I’m glad I held on to them. Those pockets that we loved so much in the beginning, now only see the light of day if someone unfamiliar will be on diaper duty. And once we discovered fleece and wool act as not only a wetness barrier, but can be cute pants and shorts to complete an outfit; our fitteds have taken over our cloth diapering empire.

The lesson to be learned is that cloth diapering will be in a constant state of evolution for you. You will love and hate different things for different reasons and those feelings will ebb and flow. What works for a while may not in several months, there is a huge cloth diapering world out there and you should make like Christopher Columbus and explore it. Don’t become discouraged by what doesn’t work for you or so set in a system that you can’t embrace change when you need to. Your diapers do not define you and variety can be the spice of your cloth diapering life.

On hold

Due to computer issues we're putting our blog on hold temporarily. The packages arrive and my husband cringes. Even my 5 year old will say with utter exasperation "more diapers." To me cloth diapering is more than just an eco-, pocketbook-friendly choice. It's a hobby, a lifestyle and a whole culture. And I love living in it. And for me it has the added bonus of being my job. So when my poor husband rolls his eyes I can smile and say "business research." At least I don't run a chocolate shop.

This week our babe had a yeast rash and I'm too stubborn to buy a pack of disposables and wait for it to clear while thouroughly cleaning the stash. So we pulled out our pre-folds. They can take a beating in the wash, which we needed for the yeasties and I wasn't as worried about what might happen if the cream built up on them. They also dry faster which was nice as the stripping, washing, drying process on our other diapers took much longer.

I then remembered I had several new pre-flats from a Peanutbutter & Ellie co-op I had participated in on the Diaper Pin. Time to try them out!

When they arrived they were a bundle of absolute squishiness. We did have some color bleeding in our prep wash, even with a color catching sheet. I recommend prepping them by themselves in order to protect your other diapers.

I purchased the Grae as I wanted a snappiable diaper. We use pins, but I'll admit I am not proficient enough to use them exclusively on a squirmy baby, but we keep trying. I love how stretchy they are. Made from bamboo velour and terry I get a better fit than I ever have with our traditional pre-folds or flats. They are very soft and the bright colors tempt me to go coverless. They are surprisingly absorbant considering how trim they are. If you're thinking of trying a pre-fold or flat or if you want to rediscover the pre-fold/flat love then I definately recommend the Peanutbutter & Ellie pre-flat.

What is a pre-flat and how did it come to be?

"I decided that making bamboo prefolds the traditional way (of folding and having layers in the middle) was taking too long to dry and were a pain to make. I remember trying to think of a new way to do it that would be less work, just as absorbant and would dry pretty fast. I also wanted to sell them and didn't want to copy the ladies who were making prefolds.
Finally it hit me at 10:00 pm while I lay in bed. Please don't tell me I'm the only one who thinks of diapers at night! What if I did two layers of bamboo velour, which I knew to be absorbant, with a layer of terry throught the middle? The terry was thin and wouldn't add bulk. I got up the next morning and made my first one. I decided to put stitching lines down the middle to give it stability and easier folding.
I serged all around with colored thread but didn't like the look. I wanted them to look like a prefold. So I did natural serging on the sides and soft wooly nylon colored thread for the top and bottom. Then I was happy. These didn't look like anything I had seen out there. It is very important to me to be original (at least to my knowledge).
I tested them out for 1 month on Molly and found out the it was hard to Snappi bamboo velour. I was scared of pins back then! So I put two layers of velour together and backed it with bamboo terry. This created a Snappi-able layer.
In November 2007, I opened my cart and debuted my Molly bamboo velour preflat TM and my Grae Snappi-able bamboo velour/terry preflatTM. Seriously 5 minutes after I went live, I had an order. I couldn't believe it! By the end of the day I was sold out and haven't been able to keep them in stock since. Thank you all so much.
I orginally called them flats but that didn't really describe what they were. They were a cross between a flat (no layers in the very middle) and a prefold (size wise). So my husband said "How about a preflat?" Since I couldn't think of anything better (lol), preflatTM it was.
Oh and in case you are wondering, all of my products are named for my kids. Peanutbutter & Ellie is named for my daughter Ellie and up until November 2007 was the name of my children's clothing line."

-by Amy from the Peanutbutter & Ellie website-

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='wet bag. Alaska is beautiful and no matter if you've been here your whole life or only a matter of months you will always be able to find something fun and interesting to do.

Exit Glacier near Seward, AK

We loaded up a camper with more than enough suppllies for our 4 day stay-cation, and a nice stash of fluffies. Since we had the luxury of the camper I folded and stacked them into a laundry basket and it stowed nicely. The same adventure in a tent or less accomodating space would have required them to be stored in a large wetbag to keep them all together and from getting dirt and debris all over them.

I was very happy that the shower head doubled as a diaper sprayer. It was conveniently located by the toilet, had the right amount of force, and a little button to start and stop the flow. It worked so well I politely begged my husband to insure ours got installed when we returned home.

Our Planet Wise hanging wet/dry bag did an amazing job at holding all the dirties and keeping our quarters stink free. We probably could have stayed another couple days. A bit larger in size our Goodmama hanging pail was perfect as a dirty duds bag. I could have used our regular mesh laundry bags, but I love that the wet bags were perfect for clothes soaked from getting too close to the river as well as containing the campfire smell. Our smaller wetbags were toted along on our hiking trips and day at the Sea Life Center. And on one outing we even used a wetbag as a makeshift drinking bowl for the dog. Yes, it kept the water in that well.

I was so impressed that we took our cloth with us and honestly felt that it's adventures like this that make you realize how easy it is to handle cloth diapering in a day to day routine. I've also learned that one can never have too many wet bags, what uses can you come up with?

Real Diaper Association

While we've been a supportor of the RDA and it's mission we finally made a commitment to be an RDA member and active advocate. They believe in changing the world of diapering one fluffy bum at a time. And have a well put together list of facts as well as tips for sharing your love for cloth.

As a cloth diaper retailer it's not enough to just sell cloth diapers and use them yourself. There are a large number of families out there who aren't aware that cloth diapering is an option and many who have a skewed view of what is involved in using cloth. At Sweet Camo we not only want to go your go to shop for your cloth diapering needs, but we want to be a resource for raising awareness. We want to share our experiences and help you through any questions or troubles.

In the future we plan to host cloth diapering classes where you can come and share your own cloth diapering adventures and bring along a friend who may be toying with the idea of trying cloth, but doesn't know where to start. Look for one of our diaper swaps in the coming months to get to know other cloth diapering moms in the area and trade your pre-loved fluff for something new to you.

If you have any ideas, suggestions, or concerns we'd love to hear from you. You may be featured on the blog or in our store.

Real baby, Real Diaper

Riley sports a Goodmama

Welcome to our blog

We decided to start blogging as a way to further inform everyone what's going on at Sweet Camo Babytique. As we prepare to expand into a brick and mortar store we felt this would compliment our move.

Sweet Camo was born from a desire to share cloth diapering and provide a much needed service in our area. I was frustrated that there weren't solid options for cloth diapering resources. My dream was to not only bring a complete store of products to meet the needs of cloth diapering famlies nearby, but to be an advocate for cloth diapering. When Sweet Camo opens it's doors it will not only provide a fun place to shop, but it will be a comfortable place to learn about cloth diapering. There will be hands on opprotunities to see what it's all about. We hope you enjoy coming along for the ride.
